Why Biblical Justice and NOT Social Justice?

In today’s world, the pursuit of justice and compassion is ever-present, with many advocating for social justice to address various societal issues. While social justice is a commendable endeavor, it is crucial for Christians to also understand and embrace the concept of biblical justice, which stands as a superior lens for promoting fairness and compassion. The Scriptures deeply root biblical justice, and it reveals God’s heart for humanity. One of the foundational passages that illuminate the essence of biblical justice is Micah 6:8, which states, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” This verse emphasizes that justice is not only an external pursuit but also a personal commitment to living righteously before God and man.

The teachings of Jesus further exemplify the principles of biblical justice. In Matthew 23:23, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for neglecting the weightier matters of the law, including justice, mercy, and faithfulness. This demonstrates that biblical justice is not merely a societal concern but a fundamental aspect of the Christian life, intertwining with mercy and faithfulness.

The Apostle Paul’s writings also shed light on the importance of justice within the Christian community. In Galatians 3:28, he declares, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” This verse emphasizes that biblical justice transcends social boundaries and calls for equitable treatment and unity among all believers.

Embracing biblical justice compels Christians to actively engage in addressing systemic issues and alleviating the suffering of the marginalised and oppressed. James 1:27 highlights the essence of this mandate, saying, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” This verse underscores the vital role of compassion and care for vulnerable individuals as an integral part of biblical justice.

While social justice seeks to address specific societal problems, biblical justice encompasses a more profound and all-encompassing perspective on fairness and compassion. By aligning our lives with the principles of biblical justice and understanding God’s heart for humanity, we can become powerful agents of transformative change in the world. As Christians, let us heed the call to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God, making a lasting impact through biblical justice for the glory of His name.
