Why the Last Places Matter Most

When Jesus gave the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), He didn’t say, “Go where it’s easiest.” He said, “Go into all the world.” Yet, so often, we focus on places where the gospel is already known and welcomed. Meanwhile, entire communities remain untouched, waiting for someone to bring them the Good News.
The heart of Jesus is clear—He leaves the ninety-nine to go after the one (Luke 15:4-7). That one might be in a remote village, a closed-off nation, or a place where mentioning Christ comes with real danger. But if we truly believe the gospel is for everyone, then reaching these places isn’t optional—it’s essential.
The Places We Often Overlook

It’s easy to gravitate toward places where churches thrive and Christian culture is accepted. But what about those who have never even heard the name of Jesus? There are regions where people live and die without ever encountering a believer or holding a Bible in their hands.

The Apostle Paul was relentless in his mission, often pressing into areas where Christ had not been preached (Romans 15:20). His focus was always on taking the gospel where it was most needed, not just where it was most welcomed. Shouldn’t we have the same mindset?

What It Takes to Reach the Last Places

Going to the hard places isn’t about being reckless; it’s about being obedient. It takes courage, prayer, and a willingness to step into the unknown. It also takes wisdom—Jesus told His disciples to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves (Matthew 10:16).

It’s not just about missionaries packing their bags and heading off to distant lands. It’s about churches and believers everywhere recognising their role in supporting and sending those who are called. Whether through prayer, financial support, or advocacy, every believer has a part to play in reaching the unreached.

The Reward of Obedience

Taking the gospel to the last places first isn’t just about strategy—it’s about faithfulness. And when we step out in faith, God moves. History is full of stories of people who risked everything to take the gospel to the hardest places, and time and time again, God showed up in powerful ways.

Jesus promised that the gospel would be preached to all nations before the end would come (Matthew 24:14). That means we have a role to play in ushering in His return. The last places might seem far away, but in God’s plan, they’re a priority. Let’s make them ours, too.
